The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has defended the double-track system under Ghana’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, emphasizing its crucial role in expanding access to quality education for Ghanaian students.
Despite growing calls from various stakeholders to discontinue the system, Dr. Adutwum cautioned that removing it could prevent thousands of students from benefiting from free secondary education.
Dr. Adutwum explained that the double-track system was introduced to address infrastructure limitations, particularly in high-demand schools, allowing them to accommodate more students within existing facilities.
He added, however, that with significant improvements in infrastructure at many Senior High Schools, most second-cycle institutions will soon be able to discontinue the double-track system, as they are now equipped to admit more students than before.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum made these remarks yesterday during a meeting with parents and education stakeholders, where he also outlined Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s plans for the education sector. In discussing the major achievements of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, which he says places this administration at the forefront of transforming public basic and secondary schools, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum highlighted that Dr. Bawumia’s administration would continue to build upon the current foundation when given the mandate in the upcoming general elections.
He stated that the next NPP government aims to construct numerous universities across the country, with a special focus on STEM institutions, to comprehensively modernize the education sector.
