Former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has rejected claims that his tenure contributed to the acquittal and discharge of former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Christine Tamakloe Attionu. In a press release dated July 31, 2026, Dame described comments blaming him and the previous Akufo-Addo administration for the outcome of the appeal as “false and misleading.” He maintained that no notice of appeal filed by Attionu in 2024 was served on the Office of the Attorney General during his tenure. According to him, state attorneys informed the Court of Appeal that they only became aware of the appeal after the court directed both parties to file written submissions. Dame also stated that his focus while in office was to secure Attionu’s extradition from the United States to serve the sentence imposed by the High Court. He noted that a United States District Court in Nevada upheld Ghana’s extradition request in April 2026. The former Attorney General further argued that significant developments in the appeal, including the filing of written submissions by Attionu’s legal team and subsequent court proceedings, took place after he had left office. He also questioned the handling of the case under the current administration, alleging that the acquittal has reinforced public concerns about the administration of justice. Dame further criticized what he described as the government’s approach to prosecuting corruption-related cases, while contrasting it with the discontinuation of cases involving members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC). The Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge Sedina Tamakloe Attionu has generated widespread public and political debate, with both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) offering differing interpretations of the outcome.
