Bawumia outlines six policy priorities to position Africa as global AI leader

Former Vice President of Ghana and 2028 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, has outlined six key policy commitments he believes are critical for Africa to become a global force in artificial intelligence.

He presented these proposals as part of his keynote address at the LSE Africa Summit 2026 held at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Dr Bawumia stressed that Africa must move beyond discussions and adopt practical, measurable actions to build a competitive AI ecosystem.

He noted that success in the digital age will depend on deliberate planning, sustained investment, and strong institutional capacity across the continent.

“Technological revolutions reward those who build foundations: institutions, infrastructure, skills, and rules before they chase the latest applications,” he said, adding that Africa must act “boldly, but methodically” to secure its place in the global digital economy.

Outlining his proposals, he called for investments in reliable electricity, broadband infrastructure, and secure data systems, as well as the development of trustworthy data ecosystems and large-scale talent development programmes.

He also emphasised the need for stronger public sector procurement capacity and the integration of ethical standards into AI deployment.

“Build AI foundations… build trustworthy data ecosystems… build talent at scale,” he said, listing the priorities, while also highlighting the importance of cross-border collaboration to create interoperable digital markets across Africa.

Dr Bawumia concluded with a call to action for African leaders and institutions to seize the moment and shape the future of AI.

“Africa should be poised to shape the global AI conversation not as a passive consumer, but as a builder of responsible systems,” he stated, adding that “if we unite borders through infrastructure, skills, governance, and markets, then AI can become a force for shared prosperity.”

Apologise over galamsey claims or face law suit — Dame tells Kwakye Ofosu.”

Former Ghana Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Dame, has threatened to sue the country’s Minister of Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, if he does not issue a public apology within seven days over alleged defamatory remarks.   The dispute stems from comments Mr. Kwakye is said to have made during an appearance on Good Morning Ghana, a current affairs programme on Metro TV.   In a formal letter, Mr. Dame accused the minister of falsely claiming that he failed to act on a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) report into alleged illegal mining activities involving Akonta Mining, a company reportedly linked to a prominent political figure.   Mr. Kwakye is alleged to have suggested that the former Attorney General either knew about the report and failed to act or was unfit for office if he did not. He further implied that such inaction amounted to complicity in illegal mining, locally referred to as “galamsey.”   Mr. Dame has strongly denied the allegations, pointing to a response obtained through Ghana’s Right to Information (RTI) law by a private lawyer. According to the response, the Office of the Attorney General did not receive any CID docket related to Akonta Mining between 2022 and 2024, during Mr. Dame’s tenure. The document reportedly states that the docket was only submitted in September 2025, after he had left office.   Describing the remarks as “false” and “malicious,” Mr. Dame argued that the minister had access to official records and should have verified the claims before making them public.   He is demanding a retraction and apology on the same television platform, the removal of the statements from online platforms, and a formal written apology.   Mr. Dame warned that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe would result in legal proceedings against Mr. Kwakye and any parties involved in publishing the statements.
