The Executive Director of the Institute of Education Studies (IFEST), Dr. Peter Partey Anti, has called for a thorough restructuring of the Student Loan Trust Fund to ensure that qualified students with admissions can apply and receive funding before the start of the academic year, rather than relying on the government’s promise to pay the tuition for first-year students.
In an interview with Kofigo Media, Dr. Partey Anti explained that the current state of the Student Loan Trust Fund has led to delays in the disbursement of funds, making it difficult for students who genuinely need financial assistance to access the support required for their education.
He emphasized that restructuring the Student Loan Trust Fund would create a more efficient system, allowing more students to gain access to the necessary funds to pursue tertiary education.
According to Dr. Partey Anti, a timely and accessible loan system is crucial for enhancing educational opportunities for students across the country rather than the government decision to pay for the fees of all level 100s even for those who have the ability to pay.
Dr. Partey Anti further noted that the funds allocated to cover the tuition of first-year students could be better utilized to address the growing infrastructural challenges in tertiary institutions. He explained that while some students gain admission, they are unable to attend due to inadequate infrastructure at these institutions.
