Ambassador Kojo Bonsu urges Ghanaian businesses to exhibit at Canton Fair to boost industrial exports

Ghana’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Kojo Bonsu, has called on Ghanaian businesses to secure exhibition space at the China Import and Export Fair, popularly known as the Canton Fair, to showcase industrial and value-added “Made in Ghana” products to the global market. Ambassador Bonsu made the call during a working visit to the China Foreign Trade Centre at the Canton Fair Complex in Guangzhou on Thursday, June 25, 2026. He was received by Ms. Zhu Yong, Director General of the Centre, and was accompanied by Mr. Sidney Kwesi Ellis, Consul General of the Republic of Ghana in Guangzhou. The Ambassador said the next phase of engagement between Ghana and China must shift from raw commodity trade to finished goods. He urged the Centre to support Ghanaian manufacturers to exhibit at future editions, noting that many Ghanaian products could benefit from China’s zero-tariff policy for least developed countries. “Beyond raw materials, which are already traded between Ghana and China, we must exhibit processed minerals, processed foods, ceramics, textiles, auto components, and other manufactured Ghanaian products,” Ambassador Bonsu said. “The Canton Fair played a pivotal role in building China’s industry. Ghanaian businesses must use the same platform to build ours. We cannot continue to export only raw materials and import finished goods,” he added. Ms. Zhu Yong welcomed the call and said the Centre is ready to support more Ghanaian companies to exhibit as industrial exporters. Ms. Zeng Ping, Deputy Director of the External Relations Office, said the China Foreign Trade Centre looks forward to seeing more Ghanaian firms present value-added products to international buyers. Following the tour, Ambassador Bonsu visited Ceramics China 2026, where he engaged manufacturers on equipment supply, technology transfer, and market access. The visit aligns with Ghana’s Critical Minerals Policy 2023, which requires local processing of strategic minerals before export, as Ghana seeks to capture greater value from its resources and move up the value chain. The programme concluded with a group photograph and the presentation of a commemorative gift to the Ambassador.     Spread the love

WE ARE NO LONGER HEALING, WE ARE PREPARING TO GOVERN”: BAWUMIA FIRES UP NPP MINORITY AHEAD OF PARLIAMENT

New Patriotic Party Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a clear and forceful signal to his party’s Minority Caucus in Parliament: the period of internal recovery from the 2024 election defeat is over, and the NPP must now present itself to Ghana as a credible government-in-waiting. Speaking at a pre-Parliament briefing with Minority MPs on the eve of the resumption of the Second Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament, Dr. Bawumia told the assembled legislators that the country is watching closely and that the next phase of the NPP’s trajectory would be defined by how it conducts itself in the Chamber and beyond. “We have finished the period of introspection. We must now position ourselves credibly as a party preparing to govern from 7th January 2029.” Dr. Bawumia was emphatic that the Minority must no longer see itself as a wounded party licking its wounds, but as a disciplined parliamentary force ready to lead. He argued that from this session onward, every action taken in the House, every statement made to the press, and every engagement held in constituencies must be guided by a single question in the minds of ordinary Ghanaians: “Can I trust the NPP to run my country again?” A Party Rebuilding Its MandateThe flagbearer acknowledged that the NPP’s return to power in 2029 would not come easily, and warned against complacency or fragmentation within the Caucus. He reminded MPs of the party’s foundational achievements in government, including the National Health Insurance Scheme, the Free Senior High School policy, the School Feeding Programme, and the Youth Employment Programme, and urged them to own and project that legacy with confidence. “We must always project this posture, that we are a party preparing to govern,” he told the MPs. “This will send a strong and well-meaning message to the people of Ghana and emphasize our belief that it is only the NPP that can move this nation on a glorious path.” Direct Support PledgedIn a commitment that underscored the seriousness of his engagement, Dr. Bawumia pledged to be personally and actively involved in supporting the Caucus to achieve its parliamentary objectives. He disclosed that the broader party was also building a strong institutional architecture through sector committees to ensure that the NPP speaks with a unified and coordinated strategy at all times. “I will be directly involved in supporting you to achieve this,” he told MPs. “The entire party is also building a strong architecture to support you through the sector committees, so that we sing from the same hymn sheet and act with a coordinated strategy at every point in time.” The address marks one of the Flagbearer’s most substantive public engagements with the parliamentary wing of the party since winning the NPP’s presidential primary, and is expected to set the tone for the Minority’s approach in the weeks and months ahead. BAWUMIA TO NPP MPs: “WE ARE A GOVERNMENT-IN-WAITING”

NPP Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has declared that the New Patriotic Party’s posture going into the new parliamentary session must be that of a “government-in-waiting”, sending a decisive signal that the party has moved past post-election introspection and is now squarely focused on the path back to power in 2029.Addressing the Minority Caucus in a closed-door briefing on the eve of Parliament’s resumption, Dr. Bawumia told the MPs that how they conduct themselves from Thursday’s sitting onward would be central to rebuilding Ghanaian confidence in the NPP as a capable and trustworthy governing party.”Let every Ghanaian who watches this session come away thinking: the NPP is ready, and the NPP is on our side.”A Strategic Shift in PostureThe declaration represents a deliberate strategic repositioning by the party’s flagbearer. Rather than framing the Minority’s role primarily as a defensive exercise in post-defeat recovery, Dr. Bawumia reframed it as an assertive, forward-looking enterprise with a clear destination: forming the next government of Ghana in January 2029.He acknowledged that the NDC government’s honeymoon period was gradually wearing off and that Ghanaians were beginning to ask harder questions about the administration’s ability to deliver on its campaign promises. He positioned this as a window of opportunity for the NPP to step forward as the credible alternative. The Road to 2028 Starts NowDr. Bawumia was insistent that the work of rebuilding voter confidence cannot be deferred to election season. He told MPs that the NDC government’s goodwill must be worn down gradually and persistently, and that every parliamentary session, every committee hearing, every media engagement, and every constituency visit was an opportunity to advance that objective.”The road to 2028 will not be won in one rally or one manifesto launch,” he told the Caucus. “It will be won day by day, question by question, statement by statement, community by community, and constituency by constituency. And in that work, you, the Minority Caucus, are indispensable.”Projecting A Governing MentalityThe Flagbearer outlined what this governing posture should look like in practice: MPs who speak with facts when they question ministers; who speak with discipline when they address the press; who carry hope when they return to their constituencies; and who remind their constituents that the NPP has not disappeared and has not been silenced, but is carefully preparing a better, more visionary government. He also called on the Caucus to offer credible alternative propositions where they criticise government policy, arguing that a purely oppositional stance would fail to resonate with Ghanaians who want substance, not obstruction. “An opposition that opposes everything is heard by nobody,” he said.Unity as FoundationUndergirding the government-in-waiting posture, Dr. Bawumia placed a firm emphasis on unity as the Caucus’s greatest asset. He called on MPs to subordinate personal ambitions to the collective goal of returning the NPP to power, and stressed that the party’s rivals must not be given the gift of avoidable internal divisions.”Let no one outside this party profit from avoidable divisions within our ranks,” he said. “The people who sent us to Parliament, and the millions who still look to us for hope, deserve a united and serious NPP.”Dr. Bawumia closed his address with words of personal confidence in the Caucus, declaring that he was proud of each MP, trusted them, and would stand with them every step of the way as the party works to rebuild, reorganise, reconnect with the Ghanaian people, and return to government.
