Bawumia advocates strong digital infrastructure as foundation for AI growth

Former Vice President of Ghana and NPP 2028 flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, has underscored the importance of robust digital infrastructure as the foundation for artificial intelligence development in Africa.

He argued that without reliable electricity, broadband, and data systems, AI ambitions on the continent would remain unattainable.

Delivering his keynote at the LSE Africa Summit 2026 at the London School of Economics and Political Science, Dr Bawumia highlighted significant disparities in internet connectivity and electricity access across African countries.

While acknowledging progress, he stressed that the quality of access remains a critical issue.

“AI thrives on connectivity, electricity, and reliable digital infrastructure,” he said.

“Before we debate algorithms, we must be disciplined about the foundations that enable adoption at scale: networks, power, and trustworthy data systems.”

He pointed out that internet penetration and electricity access across Africa remain uneven, warning that such disparities could widen inequality if not addressed.

He also referenced global data indicating that billions of people remain offline, with Africa lagging behind.

The former Vice President summarised the continent’s challenge in clear terms: “No electricity, no compute. No broadband, no scaling. No trusted data systems, no safe deployment.”

He called for urgent and coordinated investment in infrastructure, noting that Africa’s AI agenda must be treated as an infrastructure agenda to ensure inclusive and sustainable digital growth.

Apologise over galamsey claims or face law suit — Dame tells Kwakye Ofosu.”

Former Ghana Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Dame, has threatened to sue the country’s Minister of Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, if he does not issue a public apology within seven days over alleged defamatory remarks.   The dispute stems from comments Mr. Kwakye is said to have made during an appearance on Good Morning Ghana, a current affairs programme on Metro TV.   In a formal letter, Mr. Dame accused the minister of falsely claiming that he failed to act on a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) report into alleged illegal mining activities involving Akonta Mining, a company reportedly linked to a prominent political figure.   Mr. Kwakye is alleged to have suggested that the former Attorney General either knew about the report and failed to act or was unfit for office if he did not. He further implied that such inaction amounted to complicity in illegal mining, locally referred to as “galamsey.”   Mr. Dame has strongly denied the allegations, pointing to a response obtained through Ghana’s Right to Information (RTI) law by a private lawyer. According to the response, the Office of the Attorney General did not receive any CID docket related to Akonta Mining between 2022 and 2024, during Mr. Dame’s tenure. The document reportedly states that the docket was only submitted in September 2025, after he had left office.   Describing the remarks as “false” and “malicious,” Mr. Dame argued that the minister had access to official records and should have verified the claims before making them public.   He is demanding a retraction and apology on the same television platform, the removal of the statements from online platforms, and a formal written apology.   Mr. Dame warned that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe would result in legal proceedings against Mr. Kwakye and any parties involved in publishing the statements.
